Anti-Drug Campaign

The Anti-Drug Campaign is an initiative of National Prosecuting Authority in the Soweto Court. Prosecutors who are exposed to criminal cases on a daily basis became aware of statistical relevant patterns. They observed that many young people filtering through the criminal justice system were children and youth with histories of drug or substance abuse.  In a social responsibility drive, prosecutors took the initiative of commencing a carefully structured substance abuse prevention campaign which would  reduce the number of drug related offences committed by children and youth.

Partners which were identified to assist in this campaign included;
-     The National Prosecuting Services
     (Soweto West Rand Cluster)
-     SANCA (Nishtara)
-     Child in Crisis
-     Bosasa Youth Development Centre
-    Tshepo, ex-drug dealer, motivational speaker and councillor from Grace Bible Church

Social workers, Child and Youth Care workers and children in Mogale Youth Centre participated in an event using drama media as a vehicle for change. This was conducted by children who had been involved in drugs and crime and living testimonies were given why ‘crime doesn’t pay’, linking this to their current detention circumstances.  A more realistic picture was created as the children served as peer counselors being the same age as the children in the schools being visited.  Children were able to related meaningfully to the content bringing about reflection and a desire to change.
