> Guiding Principles and Values
Our Child & Youth Care Centres are guided by South African Legislation, international trends, guidelines and National Policy. A combination of these, incorporated into our internal policies and procedures lead to the effective and efficient rendering of services to children and youth in our care.
The practice principles below lay the foundation for the complete well-being of children in care.
Best interest of the child
Non-discrimination
Child Protection
The right to survival and development
All children in our care should experience the following principles when receiving services in Bosasa Facilities:
•Accountability: Everyone who intervenes with children and their families should be held accountable for the delivery of an appropriate and quality service. At Bosasa we strive for service excellence.
•African Renaissance: As South Africans and Africans, all services to children/young people and their families reflect an understanding of the African context in which they are based and consciously support African Renaissance.
•Age appropriateness: Every child is addressed in a manner appropriate to his or her age and intellectual development and should be spoken to and be allowed to speak in his or her own language; through an interpreter if necessary.
·Best interest of the child: this is paramount in all interventions with children and BOSASA believes in acting in a manner that illustrates our principle of BIONIC (Believe it or not I care) at all times
•Child-centeredness: Positive developmental experiences support and capacity building is ensured through regular developmental programmes which strengthen the child’s improvement over time.
•Community-Centered: Our children come from communities and as such we actively participate in the communities in which we work and assist in strengthening the community’s development over time.
•Confidentiality: Professionalism is vital and thus we do not disclose information without valid permission.
•Diversity: All children are treated in a manner which takes into account his or her cultural values and beliefs.
•Effectiveness and Efficiency: we strive to provide services to children and their families in the most effective and efficient way possible.
•Empowerment: The resourcefulness of each child and their family is promoted by providing opportunities to use and build their own capacity and support networks and to act on their own choices and enhance their sense of responsibility.
•Equality: Children have equal access to available services and every effort should be made to ensure that children receive similar treatment.
•Family Preservation: All objective of all services is to keep children within the family or community wherever possible. When a child is placed in alternative care, services should aim to retain and support communication and relationships between the child and their family (unless proven not to be in their best interests)
•Integration: Services to children/young people and their families should be holistic, inter-sectoral and delivered by an appropriate multi-disciplinary team wherever possible.
•Non-discriminatory: No young person will be refused admission to a centre on the basis of race, religion, sexual orientation, or cultural heritage and provision for an appropriate staff team who can understand and communicate with each young person will be made.
•Normalization: Children should be exposed to normative challenges, activities and opportunities, which promote participation and development.
•Participation: Children are to be actively involved in all the stages of the intervention process.
•Restorative Justice: The approach is to restore societal harmony and put wrongs right rather than punishment.
•Rights-based: The rights of children as established in the South African Constitution and the various international conventions ratified by South Africa, will be protected.
•Strengths- based: Bosasa’s holistic development strategy identifies and builds on strengths of the child.
