Holistic Development Strategy

BOSASA Youth Development Centres’ has a unique HOLISTIC Development Strategy based on the children’s right to physical, cognitive, emotional, social and economic development.  A unique HOLISTIC Development Programme has been developed to channel their talents, desires, abilities and energy in a positive way. This Strategy seeks to promote wholeness through the enhancement of the children and youth’s sense of belonging, mastery, independence and generosity.

Its intended purpose is to stimulate the positive self-image, intellectual ability, sense of social responsibility and physical well being of children and youth.

The HOLISTIC Development Strategy comprises the following 7 areas:

· Education (Intellectual and Skills)
· Personal Development
· Therapeutic Intervention
· Cultural Activities
· Entrepreneurial Development
· Sports & Recreation
· Reintegration into Society

Networking with other role players is an integral part of the holistic approach, which facilitates advocacy and establishment of meaningful relationships ensuring successful reintegration of young people into society.

Our services are:
Developmental in nature

•  Focusing on strengths
  Building competency
  Encouragement of trial-and-error learning
Always taking the context into consideration
  Understanding and responding appropriately to
   developmental tasks and needs
A strong belief of the potential within each child
   and family
Work is aimed at maximizing potential rather than
   minimizing the problem.
A multi-disciplinary team approach in which the child and family are recognized as full members of the team.

·  Restorative and Rehabilitative

Our approach to children in trouble with the law focuses on restoring societal harmony and putting wrongs right rather than punishment. The child should be held accountable for his or her actions and where possible make amends to the victim.

·  Programmes are therapeutic in nature

Programmes are restorative, rehabilitative and improve social functioning. They are rendered by the social worker, psychologist and occupational therapist.

·  Programmes restore dignity

Maintaining respect for the young person’s well-being and dignity is vital.  Interventions are of such a nature that children cannot be physically, socially or emotionally hurt.

·  Multi-disciplinary approach to programmes - A multi-disciplinary approach is followed in the programmes and this assists in examining options, rendering services and evaluating in a holistic manner.
