You should never kit yourself in a cowboy hat and boots unless you have a date in the Lone Star State of Texas. So when Texas beckoned the Bosasa Youth Development Centres’ directors to a National Conference on Restorative Justice, they accepted with speed. With their counterparts in the Department of Social Services closely in tow, Jackie Leyds, Thandi Makoko, Danie van Tonder and Papa Leshabane made a beeline for San Antonio, Texas.
A stop over at the Matrix Institute on Addictions was on the cards. The management of drugs-related cases was mission critical to Bosasa Youth Development Centres. Says Jackie: “A lot of young people admitted to the facilities are there for drug related offences. Substance abuse affects us all, our children and families are exposed to it daily”. A close working relationship has since developed between Bosasa Youth Development Centres and SMART (Substance Misuse Advocacy Research and Training). The benefits of this relationship are bearing immense fruit. Bosasa Youth Development Centres’ staff have undergone training with SMART. Sarah Fischer, director of SMART played a leading role in organising the visit to the Matrix Institute. Many other developments are expected to come out of this partnership. “We would be wise to watch this space,” warns Jackie. The shared vision between the Department of Social Development in the North West and Bosasa made it necessary for the Department’s officials to join the trip with Bosasa directors. “This would be in the best interest of the children”.
The Department and Bosasa would, in their joint efforts, look beyond the mere fulfilment of basic service delivery. They seek advanced solutions and innovative ways to work with children, crime, substance abuse and restorative practices. A visit to a specialised drug court in Rancho Cucumago was enlightening. “It was heart-warming to see the people dealt with in a humane yet firm manner in this specialised court,” says Jackie. The partnership between the Department of Social Development, Bosasa Youth Development Centres and SMART work together for the national interest.
